“Who can be trusted in this world filled with hidden enemies?”
“Love your friends from the depth of your heart but don’t ever be blind to their faults.”
“My friends in Cambridge had become a kind of family, and I felt a sense of belonging with them that, for many years, had been absent on Buck s Peak. Sometimes I felt damned for those feelings. No natural sister should love a stranger more than a brother, I thought, and what sort of daughter prefers a teacher to her own father? But although I wished it were otherwise, I did not want to go home. I preferred the family I had chosen to the one I had been given, so the happier I became in Cambridge, the more my happiness was made fetid by my feeling that I had betrayed Buck s Peak. That feeling became a physical part of me, something I could taste on my tongue or smell on my own breath.”
“Believe to the end, even if all men went astray and you were left the only one faithful; bring your offering even then and praise God in your loneliness. And if two of you are gathered together - then there is a whole world, a world of living love. Embrace each other tenderly and praise God, for if only in you two His truth has been fulfilled.”
“She told him the plan. It was loud and dumb and very likely to hurt, so, of course, he agreed.”
“The government didn t care about her, the schools didn t, the scholarship organizations didn t, but this one person did, and sometimes one person could make a world of difference.”
“love has little to do with blood relations and more to do with who you choose to bleed for”
“those who have found each other once will find each other again and yet again”
“Every human creature is a terror to every other human creature. Human minds are like unknown planets, encountering and colliding. Every one of them contains jagged precipices, splintered rock-peaks, ghastly crevasses, smouldering volcanoes, scorched and scorching deserts, blistering sands, evil dungeons from behind whose barred windows mad and terrible faces peer out. Every pair of human eyes is a custom-house gate into a completely foreign port; a port whose palaces and slums, whose insane asylums and hospitals, whose market-places and sacred shrines represent the terrifying and the menacing as well as the promising and the pleasure-giving! But when once any small group of persons has been together for any reasonable length of time the official warders of these custom-house gates are withdrawn. Each individual in such a group feels he can wander freely through the purlieus of these other enclosed fortresses! He does not necessarily move a step. The point is that the gates into the unknown streets no longer bristle with bayonets, are no longer thronged with “dreadful faces” and “fiery arms.”
“I ll SEE YOU either HERE or THERE-----or IN THE AIR.”
“Yes I do give unlimited chances. Nevertheless, every chance dented weakens the bond. Eventually, this ship will sail, subtly. Intense grip on or extended period with the anchor will prove futile—and are frankly inconsequential as I don’t look back—a weakened bond is unfortunately all there is.”
“the wrong ones come to leave the right ones come to stay”
“Friends are family we have chosen ourselves.”
“The whole purpose of friendship is to give the other strength when they need it. Don t cheat me out of that perk, Walker.”
“Well, the winter s gone, and I ve written no books, earned no fortune, but i ve made a friend worth baving and I ll try to keep him all my life.”
“When we were little, best friends could be your everything.”
“hide &seek, huh you hide when i seek your help”
